Study Permit
Canada is a preferred destination for international students due to its high-quality education system, diverse cultural environment, and excellent research opportunities. To study in Canada as a foreign student, one must obtain a study permit, which authorizes them to enroll in a DLI. The study permit is a temporary visa and does not grant Canadian permanent residency. However, it allows students to stay in Canada throughout their study program and may also permit them to work part-time during their studies.
Application Process
1. Choose a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
Before applying for a study permit, applicants must select a DLI recognized by the Canadian government. The chosen DLI will issue an acceptance letter, a vital document for the study permit application.
2. Prepare Supporting Documents
Applicants must gather the necessary documents, including a valid passport, proof of acceptance from a DLI, proof of financial support, a valid medical certificate, and any other documents specified by the immigration authorities.
3. Online or Paper Application
Applicants can choose to apply for a study permit online through the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website or submit a paper application to the nearest visa application center or Canadian embassy.
4. Biometrics and Interview (if required)
Depending on the applicant’s nationality, they may need to provide biometrics (fingerprints and photo) and attend an interview at their nearest visa application center.
5. Wait for Processing
The processing time for study permit applications varies, so it’s essential to apply well in advance of the intended study start date. Applicants can check the status of their application online.
6. Receive the Study Permit
Once approved, the study permit is issued, allowing the student to travel to Canada and commence their studies.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for a Canadian study permit, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
1. Acceptance at a DLI
The applicant must have a letter of acceptance from a DLI in Canada.
2. Financial Stability
Applicants need to prove that they can financially support themselves and any accompanying family members during their stay in Canada.
3. Clean Criminal Record
Applicants must not have a criminal record and may be required to provide a police clearance certificate.
4. Good Health
Applicants must undergo a medical examination and prove they are in good health.
5. Intent to Leave Canada after Studies
Applicants must demonstrate that they intend to leave Canada upon completing their studies.
Document Requirements
The following documents are typically required for a study permit application:
- Passport and other travel documents
- Letter of acceptance from a DLI
- Proof of financial support (bank statements, scholarship letters, etc.)
- Medical examination results
- Passport-sized photographs
- Statement of purpose explaining the study plan
- Police clearance certificate (if applicable)
- Biometrics (fingerprints and photo)
Compliance and Responsibilities
Once in Canada, international students must adhere to certain responsibilities to maintain compliance with their study permit:
1. Enroll and Attend Classes
Students must be enrolled as full-time students and actively attend their classes to maintain their immigration status.
2. Respect Visa Expiry Date
Students should ensure their study permit remains valid throughout their program and apply for an extension before it expires if needed.
3. Part-Time Work Limitations
While allowed to work part-time during the academic session, students should not exceed the stipulated work hours.
4. Inform Authorities of Changes
Students must update the immigration authorities about any changes in their address, marital status, or educational institution.
5. Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
After completing their studies, students may be eligible for a PGWP, allowing them to work in Canada temporarily.
